George “Chris” Flanagan

George “Chris” Flanagan was a pioneering figure in Iowa high school wrestling, leaving an indelible mark as a coach and mentor. Born in Williamsburg, Iowa, Flanagan attended high school in a district that did not offer wrestling. His passion for the sport ignited later at Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa), where he trained under the legendary Dave McCuskey, a National Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee.

Flanagan achieved remarkable success as a collegiate wrestler. In 1933, he was crowned the Iowa Collegiate Champion at 135 pounds and secured second place at the Midwest AAU tournament. The following year, he won the Midwest AAU title, setting the stage for his future coaching endeavors.

Flanagan began his coaching career at Grant Consolidated School in Ledyard, Iowa, in 1934 and spent a subsequent year in Burt, Iowa. His legacy, however, was cemented during his tenure at Cresco High School (now Crestwood High School), where he served as the head wrestling coach from 1936 to 1970. Under his leadership, Cresco became a powerhouse in Iowa wrestling, capturing four state team championships and finishing as runners-up six times. His athletes won 34 individual state titles, and his teams dominated the Northeast Iowa Conference, claiming 10 championships.

Throughout his 34-year coaching career, Flanagan’s teams compiled an impressive dual meet record of 317 wins, 89 losses, and five ties, never experiencing a losing season. Known for his meticulous preparation and ability to inspire athletes, Flanagan cultivated a culture of excellence and sportsmanship that resonated far beyond the wrestling mat.

Flanagan retired from coaching in 1970 and teaching in 1975. His contributions to wrestling were widely recognized; he was inducted into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1970. In 1997, he received the Lifetime Service to Wrestling award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, solidifying his status as a cornerstone of Iowa’s wrestling tradition.

Flanagan passed away in 1989 at the age of 78, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire wrestlers and coaches. His dedication not only elevated the sport of wrestling in Iowa but also underscored the impact a passionate and committed coach can have on young athletes and their communities.
