Perry Hummel, a native of West Des Moines, Iowa, is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished and influential athletes in the history of Iowa wrestling. His journey from a high school wrestling standout to a national collegiate competitor exemplifies the hard work, dedication, and competitive spirit that defines the sport of wrestling in the State of Iowa.

Hummel’s wrestling career began at Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines where he quickly rose to prominence. Under the tutelage of legendary coach Bob Darrah, Hummel captured two Iowa State championships, one in 1977 and another in 1978, cementing his status as one of the state’s top wrestlers during the late 1970s. His success at the state level was further solidified when he became the US Junior National Champion in 1978, a title that marked him as a rising star on the national wrestling stage. Hummel’s achievements at Dowling helped establish the school as a powerhouse in Iowa wrestling and he was recognized as one of the elite athletes.

Following his successful high school career, Hummel took his talents to Iowa State University where he continued to excel on the collegiate level. Wrestling for the Cyclones under legendary Coach Harold Nichols, Hummel quickly made a name for himself, earning All-American honors three times during his tenure at Iowa State. His career record of 118-16-2 was a testament to his consistency and competitive edge. Perhaps his most notable achievement came in 1980 when he finished as the NCAA runner-up. This remarkable feat further solidified his reputation as one of the best wrestlers in the country. He followed this with two more top finishes in the NCAA tournaments, placing fourth in both 1981 and 1982. Hummel’s performances at the national level were integral to Iowa State’s continued success and helped lay the foundation for the program’s future triumphs.
