Gerald Grant “Germ” Leeman left an indelible mark on American wrestling, excelling as a competitor, coach, and mentor. Born in Little Cedar, Iowa, and raised in Osage, he began his journey at Osage High School under Coach Howard “Mitch” Mitchell. There, Leeman became the first wrestler in Iowa history to win three state championships (1939-1941). During this period, he also claimed a National AAU championship in 1940, demonstrating exceptional talent at a young age.

Leeman attended Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa), where his collegiate career flourished under Coach Dave McCuskey. Despite interruptions caused by his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Leeman returned to the mat with unparalleled skill and determination. In 1946, he captured the NCAA championship at 128 pounds, earning the title of Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament. His near-perfect collegiate record included an undefeated dual meet record, solidifying his reputation as one of the sport’s greatest talents.

On the international stage, Leeman represented the United States at the 1948 London Olympics, where he earned a silver medal in freestyle wrestling at 125.5 pounds. His only loss came to Turkey’s Nasuh Akar, affirming his place among the world’s wrestling elite. That same year, he won another National AAU title, closing his competitive career with remarkable accolades.

Leeman transitioned into coaching in 1949, beginning at Fort Dodge High School in Iowa, where his teams achieved near-perfect results. In 1950, he joined Lehigh University and became head coach in 1953. Over an 18-year tenure, Leeman’s teams achieved a remarkable 161-38-4 dual meet record. His leadership produced six Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) team titles and 36 individual EIWA champions. Notably, Leeman coached six wrestlers to nine NCAA individual titles, including Mike Caruso, a three-time NCAA champion.

In addition to his wrestling achievements, Leeman coached multiple sports at Lehigh University, including tennis and cross-country, further showcasing his versatility and dedication to mentoring athletes. Leeman’s legacy earned him induction into several halls of fame, including the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame (1974), the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Member (1977), and the Lehigh University Athletics Hall of Fame (1993). His lifelong impact on wrestling and sports remains a source of inspiration.
