2011 Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame Inductee

A competitive drive is evident in every phase of Mike VanArsdale’s illustrious athletic career. The Waterloo native pushed himself to excel at every level—from high school and college to international wrestling and professional fighting. His list of accomplishments speaks volumes: a state champion for West Waterloo High School, an NCAA Division I champion for Iowa State University, and a two-time World Champion on the global stage.

VanArsdale’s wrestling journey took off as a high school sophomore when he posted a 20–6 record. He followed that with a dominant junior season, winning a state title and finishing 28–2. As a senior, he went 27–3 and earned state runner-up honors, capping his prep career with a Junior National championship and a runner-up finish at the Junior World Championships.

At Iowa State, VanArsdale continued to shine. He was named a First-Team Freshman All-American, then posted a 25–10 record as a sophomore and placed sixth at the NCAA Championships. As a junior, he improved to third nationally with a 28–7 mark. In 1988, he captured the NCAA title at 167 pounds, finishing the season with a stellar 31–3 record.

VanArsdale’s post-collegiate wrestling achievements were equally impressive. He won the 1991 World Cup Championship and the CISM (Military) World Championship, and was a six-time member of the U.S. National Freestyle Team. He narrowly missed Olympic competition as a two-time Olympic alternate in 1996 and 2000, but in a testament to his elite ability, he defeated the legendary Cael Sanderson at the 2000 Olympic Trials—twelve years after winning his NCAA title.

“From the beginning, wrestling helped give me purpose and direction in my life,” VanArsdale reflected. “I dreamed about it at night and chased those dreams every day. Wrestling gave me a sense of accomplishment and confidence that I carry with me to this day.”

That competitive fire eventually carried VanArsdale into the world of mixed martial arts (MMA), where he transitioned successfully as both a professional fighter and coach. Competing in premier organizations like the UFC, VanArsdale faced some of the sport’s top names and compiled a record of 8–5, earning wins with his dominant wrestling-based style. He later coached fighters at the elite level, passing on his deep understanding of discipline, training, and competition to the next generation of athletes.

VanArsdale was inducted into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2011, along with Stewart Carter and Arlin Severson.
