2025 Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame Inductee

Keith Abens, a distinguished wrestler from Humboldt, Iowa, left a lasting legacy on the State of Iowa with his competitive spirit and determination. Abens first made his mark at Humboldt High School, where he became a wrestling sensation. A three-time Iowa High School State Wrestling Champion, he won the 145-pound title in 1967 and repeated as a champion at 154 pounds in 1968 and 1969. His success in high school wrestling set the stage for a remarkable collegiate career at Iowa State University.

At Iowa State University, wrestling under renowned coach Harold Nichols, Abens became a two-time All-American. In 1972, Abens went on a phenomenal run to reach the NCAA finals, finishing second at 167 pounds. During his notable 1973 season, he won both the Big Eight Championship and the Outstanding Wrestler award and went on to finish fourth at the NCAA tournament at 167 pounds. As team captain his senior year, Abens was awarded the Hugo Otopalik award for the Cyclones most Outstanding Wrestler on and off the mat.

After graduating in 1973 with a degree in Industrial Education, Abens took a teaching and assistant wrestling coaching job for Mason City High School. That brief stint led to Abens being the head wrestling coach at Webster City High School from 1974 to 1978. As a coach, he continued to share his passion and knowledge of wrestling with the next generation of athletes. His involvement in practices extended well beyond his coaching years, even after leaving coaching to establish a prodigious career in real estate, he could often be found at practices, showing student-athletes key wrestling moves. His dedication to helping others was a hallmark of his career.

Keith Abens passed away at the age of 72 following a heart attack in November of 2023. His legacy remains ever-present in the lives of those he coached and mentored throughout his life. He was posthumously inducted into the Humboldt Hall of Fame in recognition of his contributions to the sport of wrestling and his outstanding accomplishments both on and off the mat.

Abens is remembered not just for his wrestling achievements, but for his lasting impact on the community, his tireless efforts to support others, and his devotion to family. His contributions to the sport of wrestling and his role as a mentor to countless athletes are a testament to his character and love for the sport. Keith Abens will always be celebrated as a true champion in Iowa’s wrestling history.

Abens was inducted posthumously into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2025 along with Keith Massey, Bob Hallman, Perry Hummel, and Brad Smith.
