2025 Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame Inductee

Bob Hallman’s wrestling journey epitomizes Iowa’s trademark of toughness and excellence on the mat. Graduating from West Des Moines Dowling Catholic High School in 1979, Hallman was an inspiration in the late 1970s. Coached by the legendary Bob Darrah, Hallman competed in one of the toughest high school divisions and achieved remarkable success, becoming the first three-time place winner in Dowling history.

Hallman’s early wrestling career showed steady progression. In 1977, as a sophomore, he qualified for the state tournament in the 3A 98-pound class, finishing sixth in a bracket stacked with elite wrestlers. In 1978, Hallman competed in the 3A 105-pound class and although he fell in a hard-fought championship match, his runner-up finish positioned him as a top contender in Iowa wrestling and showcased his rapid development. In his senior season as team captain in 1979, Hallman reached the pinnacle of high school wrestling. Competing in the 3A 112-pound class, he went undefeated with a 26-0 record and captured the state championship. This victory solidified his place in Dowling’s wrestling history earning him recognition as one of the school’s all-time greats. His high school career concluded with an impressive 72-12-1 record.

Beyond his individual success, Hallman was a key contributor to Dowling’s team accomplishments during his high school career. The Maroons finished as state runners-up in 1977, won the team championship in 1978, and secured third place in 1979. His impact on the program was later honored with his induction into the Dowling Catholic Hall of Fame in 1997. The school also established the “Bob Hallman Award” given annually to the hardest-working athlete, reflecting the work ethic that defined his career.

Hallman continued wrestling at the University of Northern Iowa from 1979 to 1984. Wrestling in the highly competitive Division I landscape, he amassed a career record of 104-48-1. A two-time NCAA qualifier, competing at nationals in 1983 and 1984, Hallman served as team captain both years. His collegiate career culminated in 1984 when he placed second in the NCAA Division I national tournament at 118 pounds. His 24 career falls and his 49 dual match victories (5th most in UNI history) further underscore the dangerous and fierce competitor he was on the mat.

Bob Hallman’s induction into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame is a tribute to his perseverance and raw talent. From his formative years at Dowling to his record-setting career at the University of Northern Iowa, Hallman has left a deep-rooted mark on Iowa wrestling.
