Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame Announces 2012 Inductees

CRESCO, IA: Four individuals with diverse backgrounds will be inducted into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame in Cresco Monday, April 9. The 43rd Annual Awards Banquet and Induction Ceremonies will begin with a 5:30 social hour followed by a 6:30 banquet at the Cresco Country Club south of Cresco.

Those being inducted this year are Gene Doyle from Cedar Falls, Marv Reiland from Iowa City, Mark Sindlinger from Charles City and Bob Buzzard from Salem OR.

Gene Doyle was head coach at Cedar Falls from 1985 to 2000 with his squads posting a 242-51 dual meet record. His teams won the traditional state teams titles in 1993, 1997, and 1998 while also winning the dual meet title in 1993. He coached 43 state place finishers during his tenure including 10 state champions.

Marv Reiland is most recognized for his coaching and officiating. In the 20 years at his alma mater Eagle Grove his squads went 129-62-5. His Eagles captured three state team titles, one dual meet state title, while also being a state runner-up two times. Reiland coached 71 state qualifiers, 14 state champions and 14 state runners-up. He also officiated 42 years, was named Iowa Wrestling Official of the Year and named to the IHSAA Officials Hall of Fame in 2012. He worked 19 state tournaments and 17 years in the state dual meet tournaments.

Mark Sindlinger was a three-time state heavyweight champion for Charles City. Sindlinger then went on to start for the University of Iowa football team for three years when the Hawkeyes were able to go to four straight bowl appearances. The rare two-sport Division I athlete would then join the wrestling team in January and wrestle until nationals. Despite his limited wrestling time, Sindlinger was a two-time Big Ten Champion and a two-time All American.

Bob Buzzard was a two-time state champion for legendary coach Dave Natvig at East Waterloo. Buzzard then went on to Iowa State University where he was a two time All American. He continued to wrestle and captured a national freestyle title and a national Greco Roman title before qualifying for the Olympic team in 1972. He also has been a successful coach in Oregon including a state team title this year.

Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame Announces 2011 Inductees

Cresco, IA:

Three individuals with northeast Iowa ties will be inducted into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame in Cresco on Monday, April 11. The 42nd Annual Awards Banquet and Induction Ceremony will begin with a 5:30 social hour followed by a 6:30 banquet at the Cresco Country Club south of Cresco.

Two former Waterloo wrestlers, Mike VanArsdale and Stewart Carter, will be inducted into the hall of fame along with Arlin Severson, who was a successful wrestler and coach at New Hampton.

Mike VanArsdale won a NCAA Division 1 title for Iowa State University in 1988 , and was a two-time Olympic Alternate (1996 & 2000). He also was a 1991 World Cup Champion, a CISM (Military) World Champion and a University National Freestyle Champion. At Iowa State VanArsdale had a 108-33 record and was a three-time All American. VanArsdale wrestled at West Waterloo in high school where he was a state champion as a junior and state runner-up as a senior. VanArsdale currently lives in Chandler, AZ.

Stewart Carter was also an NCAA champion at Iowa State, winning his title at 158 pounds in 1987. Carter went 76-23-4 while wrestling all four years at Iowa State after being a “walk on” wrestler as a freshman.
Carter wrestled at Waterloo Columbus High School and was a four-time state qualifier, placing third twice and was a state runner-up as a senior. Carter currently lives in Cedar Falls.

Arlin Severson coached his New Hampton teams to four state titles. In 1990 the New Hampton team won both the state team title and the state dual meet title and they followed that up with the same titles in 1993. He coached eight state champions and 62 conference champions. Severson was a 112 pound state champion in 1957 while wrestling for New Hampton. Severson lives in New Hampton.

Dave Harty Passes

Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame member Dave Harty passed away on October 8, 2010. Dave was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1991. He was also a member of the Halls selection committee, and served as it’s chairman for many years. As with everything Dave did, he embraced the leadership role and worked hard to improve the IWHOF. He will be greatly missed. Our sincere condolences to his family.

Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame welcomes Class of 2010 Ironside, Smith, Roethler, Chapman

The Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame welcomed college wrestling champions Mark Ironside and Jason Smith, high school coaching legend Bob Roethler, and wrestling writer and historian Mike Chapman as Class of 2010 honorees. The presentations were made at a banquet at the Cresco Country Club in Cresco, Iowa on April 12.

IWHOF selection committee member Dan Gable introduced the two wrestlers:

  • Mark Ironside wrestled for Gable at the University of Iowa, winning four Midlands crowns, two Big Ten titles and two NCAA Division I championships in the late 1990s.
  • Jason Smith was a teammate of Gable’s at Iowa State University in the late 1960s and early 70s, winning back-to-back NCAA titles at 167 pounds in 1969 and 1970.

Selection committee member Dave Harty introduced Bob Roethler, who put Emmetsburg High School on the wrestling map in the 1970s, winning team and individual titles at the Iowa state wrestling tournament, despite life-threatening health issues. Roethler wrestled at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa.

Mike Chapman was introduced by selection committee Don Gooder. Chapman, a native of Waterloo, was honored for his 40 years of promoting wrestling through his numerous books, the establishment of WIN (Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine), and creating the Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute & Museum in Waterloo.

Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame Launches New Website

The Board of Directors of the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the launch of iowawrestlinghalloffame.com.  Board President Dennis Meirick states “The creation of this website will allow wrestling fans all over the world to enjoy access to the archives of our museum and explore the rich history of the 41 year old Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame.”

The Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame was founded in 1970.  The non-profit organization’s sole purpose is the promotion of amateur wrestling in Iowa.  With the addition of the class of 2010, the roster of inductees includes 97 outstanding native Iowans who’ve contributed to amateur wrestling in our state.  The Hall of Fame is located in Cresco, IA.

Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame Announces 2010 Inductees

The Board of Directors of the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame has announced the 2010 inductees into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame.  The class of 2010 includes Mark Ironside, Dr. Jason Smith, Mike Chapman and Bob Roethler.  They become the 94th, 95th, 96th, and 97th members of the Hall since the first class was inducted in 1970.  They were recommended to the Hall by members of the Selection Committee, and unanimously approved by the Board of Directors.

Mark Ironside was a two-time NCAA champion at the University of Iowa, a four-time Big Ten champion as well as being a two-time state champion from Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

Dr. Jason Smith was a two-time NCAA champion at Iowa State and the first state champion at Ankeny High School.

Mike Chapman is a prolific wrestling author and historian.  He is also the founder of the Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum in Waterloo, and the creator of WIN magazine.

Bob Roethler won four straight team titles as a coach at Emmetsburg while leading his teams to 63 straight dual meet wins and “Coach of the Year” honors in 1977.

The 41st annual Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame Awards Banquet will be held on Monday, April 12th, 2010.  The banquet will be held at the Cresco Country Club with a social at 5:30 PM followed by dinner and the induction ceremony at 6:30 PM.  Tickets for the banquet can be obtained by contacting Cindy Butikofer at 563-547-2382.

2010 Border Battle will take place March 12, 2010

The board of directors of the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame, located in Cresco, Iowa, have announced that on Friday March 12th they will host the 9th annual Border Battle, featuring the top senior wrestlers from southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa.  The “Border Battle” will take place in the Crestwood High School gym at 7:00 PM.  Tickets are available at the door.

The Minnesota team will consist of senior wrestlers from school districts located in Mower, Fillmore or Houston counties.  The Iowa team will consist of senior wrestlers from school districts located in Mitchell, Howard, Winneshiek or Allamakee counties.  Rosters will be set following the state wrestling tournaments.
